Your guide to a smooth and comfortable recovery
So, your wisdom teeth are coming out — or perhaps you’ve just had them removed. While it’s a very common procedure, it’s completely normal to feel a little nervous about the recovery process. At Cheltenham Dental, we want you to feel calm, supported, and prepared every step of the way.
Here’s what you can expect after wisdom tooth removal, and some simple tips to help your healing go as smoothly as possible.
1. Some swelling and discomfort is normal
It’s common to feel sore or swollen around the jaw for a few days. This is your body’s natural response and usually peaks around day two or three. Applying an ice pack (wrapped in a cloth) for 15 minutes at a time can help reduce swelling in the first 24 to 48 hours.
2. You’ll need to rest
Plan to take it easy for the first couple of days. Rest helps your body heal, so avoid strenuous activity, bending, or lifting. It’s a good time to catch up on a book or your favourite shows.
3. Stick to soft foods
For the first few days, stick with soft, easy-to-eat foods like yoghurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, soups (not too hot), and smoothies. Avoid anything crunchy, spicy, or chewy, and try not to use a straw — the suction can interfere with healing.
4. Keep the area clean – gently
We’ll provide you with instructions on how to care for your mouth after surgery. It’s important to keep the area clean, but very gently. You might be asked to rinse with salt water starting a day or two after the procedure. Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting, as this can dislodge the blood clot and lead to something called dry socket, which can be quite painful.
5. Pain relief and aftercare
You may be prescribed pain relief or antibiotics, depending on your case. Over-the-counter pain medication is often enough, but follow your dentist’s advice carefully. If anything doesn’t feel right — such as increasing pain, unusual swelling, or difficulty opening your mouth — give us a call straight away. We’re here if you need us.
Healing usually takes about a week
Most patients feel significantly better within 3 to 5 days, and are fully back to normal after about a week. Healing time can vary slightly depending on the complexity of the extraction and your own health.
