Simple tips to keep your smile clean, comfortable, and long-lasting
Dentures can be a great way to restore your smile and your confidence. Whether you wear a full or partial denture, taking proper care of them is essential — not just to maintain their appearance, but also to keep your mouth healthy.
At Cheltenham Dental, we take the time to show our patients how to care for their dentures properly. Here’s a helpful guide with everything you need to know.
1. Clean them every day
Just like natural teeth, dentures can build up plaque, food particles, and bacteria. Gently clean your dentures every day using a soft denture brush and a denture cleaner or mild soap. Avoid regular toothpaste, as it can be too abrasive and damage the surface.
Rinse them thoroughly after meals, if possible, especially if food gets caught underneath.
2. Handle with care
Dentures are strong, but they’re not unbreakable. When cleaning them, hold them over a folded towel or a basin of water in case you drop them. Avoid using hot water, as it can warp their shape.
3. Let your mouth rest
It’s a good idea to take your dentures out at night, unless your dentist has advised otherwise. This gives your gums a chance to rest and reduces the risk of irritation or infection.
When they’re out, store your dentures in a glass of water or a denture-soaking solution to keep them from drying out or losing their shape.
4. Don’t ignore sore spots
If your dentures are causing discomfort, don’t try to adjust them yourself — this can do more harm than good. Sore spots, rubbing, or changes in fit are common over time as your gums and bone naturally change shape. If anything feels off, book a visit with us. A simple adjustment can make a big difference.
5. Keep up with regular dental visits
Even if you wear full dentures, it’s still important to have regular check-ups. We’ll check the fit of your dentures, monitor your oral health, and ensure everything is comfortable and functioning properly. Good oral hygiene and professional care help your dentures last longer — and keep you smiling.
