Bad breath is something most people experience at some point, whether it’s first thing in the morning or after a garlicky meal. But for some, it can be a persistent issue that affects confidence and causes worry in social situations. The good news is that it’s often easy to treat. And in many cases, a trip to the dentist is the best place to start.
What’s actually causing your bad breath?
The most common reason is a build-up of bacteria in the mouth. When we don’t brush and floss effectively, tiny bits of food get stuck between the teeth and along the gumline. Bacteria feed on these particles and release odorous gases, which lead to that unpleasant smell.
Another major cause is gum disease. When plaque builds up and isn’t removed, it can irritate the gums and lead to infection. One of the early signs of gum disease is persistent bad breath. This is one of the reasons regular dental cleans are so important. They help stop problems before they become serious.
Dry mouth is also a surprisingly common factor. Saliva helps to wash away bacteria, so when your mouth is dry, whether due to medication, dehydration or even just sleeping with your mouth open, bad breath can be more noticeable.
And then of course, there are the usual suspects: coffee, onions, garlic, spicy foods, and smoking. These all play a role, but if bad breath lingers long after you’ve had those foods, it’s worth having it checked out.
Could it be something more serious?
Sometimes, ongoing bad breath can point to something happening elsewhere in the body. Conditions like sinus infections, reflux, or diabetes can contribute, which is why it’s important not to ignore it if brushing and flossing don’t seem to help.
So, what can you actually do about it?
Start with a solid at-home routine: brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and don’t forget to brush your tongue. Tthat’s where a lot of bacteria live. Drinking plenty of water can also help, especially if dry mouth is part of the problem.
Mouthwash can help in the short term, but not all are created equal. Some just mask the smell without tackling the cause. We can recommend options that actually work to reduce bacteria without drying your mouth out further.
When it’s time to see the dentist
Of course, nothing replaces a professional clean. A dental hygiene appointment removes plaque and tartar that can’t be reached with a toothbrush. It’s also a chance for us to check for signs of gum disease or other underlying issues.
At Cheltenham Dental, we take a kind, judgement-free approach. We know bad breath can feel embarrassing, but it’s much more common than people realise, and in most cases, it’s easily treatable. We’ll work with you to find the cause and give you clear steps to improve it, so you can get back to feeling confident.
